The first ever AR/VR laptop was just named as the gold award winner in the Living, Working and Learning Environments’ Edutech category at the 2019 Edison Awards. The device was developed last year by the innovative computing solutions company that designs devices to deliver spatial content, zSpace, and was launched earlier this year.
The Edison Awards body recognized zSpace this month as one of the world’s best innovators and with its inventive laptop. The zSpace laptop, for the first time in history, broke the screen barrier between AR/VR content and laptop users by flashing a multi-dimensional environment right out from the screen and in front of the users.
The innovative laptop features fresh 3D screen technology and comes with a headtracking glasses and interactive stylus to step up the AR/VR experience among users. zSpace believes the laptop it invented highly fosters creativity, collaboration, and education as it lets users interact with AR/VR elements in a more flexible and immersive environment.
Additionally, the laptop was designed to bring spatial awareness to students. It is dedicated to making education more fun with the life-like graphics it spouts from the screen and the hands-on augmented reality and virtual reality apps that it use.
For being the new wonder PC, the zSpace laptop also grabbed the CES 2019 Innovation Award last January.
Developing the First AR/VR Laptop
zSpace announced the first AR VR laptop in June, 2018. The company talked about the first portable PC that runs on Microsoft Windows 10. zSpace CEO Paul Kellenberger said about the futuristic laptop in its press release:
“The computing experience has mostly remained unchanged since the introduction of the mouse and touchscreen in the 1980s. With zSpace technology we are totally reinventing the capabilities of personal computers by eliminating the barrier between our eyes and the content we interact with, allowing for complete immersion in games, and incredibly interactive apps for education, e-commerce, enterprise and more.”
The AR and VR apps were designed to inspire curiosity among students and deepen their understanding of subject matters by creating almost real engagement between them and virtual contents.
Mr. Kellenberger continued to say:
“Our zSpace laptop PC packs all of the awesome capabilities afforded by our award-winning desktop into a cost-effective and compact, take-anywhere form factor.”
zSpace Laptop Features and Uses
Out of the box, the zSpace laptop comes with a pair of specially designed glasses that are used for engaging with virtual content. There is also a stylus with 6-degrees of freedom and it allows users to pick up and move items from the screen and out in a 3D space.
These devices are being used in schools to examine objects in detail and gain a deeper understanding of their concepts by manipulating virtual simulations that can include molecules and organisms. Furthermore, these accessories and the laptop’s built-in tracking sensors lets the power PC track the head and hand movements of the users and dynamically correct the viewing perspective in full HD.
In a statement during the launch of the zSpace laptop, Mr. Kellenberger described the zSpace experience:
“When students put on a VR headset and take a field trip or explore human anatomy, they are having an individual experience. It doesn’t encourage making connections, creativity or collaboration. zSpace was created specifically for learners, creating a shared AR/VR learning environment.
…Today’s launch of the zSpace Laptop takes that experience to the next level, moving our comfortable, interactive learning experience to the accessibility and affordability of the mobile platform.”
Other technical features of the zSpace laptop include:
- a low-power and high-performance AMD embedded accelerated processing unit (APU A9-9420)
- AMD Embedded Radeon graphics LiquidVR technology
- 256 GB SSD
- 8 GB DDR4 RAM
- 13.5 inch 1920 x 1080 HD screen,
- and several built-in applications like the zSpace Studio, zSpace Newton’s Park, zSpace Franklin’s Lab, zSpace Curie’s Elements, zSpace Euclid’s Shapes and zSpace Experiences.
Currently, there are millions of students who already experienced the zSpace laptops which were employed in over 1,000 school districts, medical schools, universities, and technical centers around the world. It is the first in the world to combine the traditional laptop with the immersive nature of augmented reality and virtual reality.
Aleigha Henderson-Rosser, Ed.D., director, instructional technology of Atlanta Public Schools said about using the zSpace laptops in schools:
“The new zSpace laptop is going to be a game-changer.
We introduced the zSpace virtual reality experience at the elementary, middle and high school levels three years ago. Schools have supported their STEAM, core academic, and Career and Technical Education programs by integrating the all-in-one zSpace hardware and software solution. Now we will continue to support these programs with the new zSpace Laptop. The laptop device will give us additional flexibility as we determine our implementation models through Atlanta Public Schools.”
zSpace continues to roll out the AR VR technology to more educational institutions with the goal of introducing it to all schools in the world. It is also looking into entering enterprises, offering the zSpace laptops for an affordable price of $1,500.
